Yoga For Wellness Series Offers Mind, Body Healing

Yoga is proven to have many physical and mental benefits, reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression, while helping practitioners become more in tune with their bodies. Fenway Health’s Yoga for Wellness series focuses on integrating movement and thought to heal the body and mind, promoting overall health.

Part of the Boundless series of healthy living classes and events, Yoga for Wellness is a series of three free yoga classes. Each class opens with a short discussion and touches on the focus theme for each class, such as gratitude, staying in the moment, and being open to change and transitions.

New to yoga or a seasoned yogi? Yoga for Wellness is for you, regardless of experience. The classes are for all levels and include modifications that emphasize listening to your body and respecting its limits. The series is designed to be a fun, balanced practice with growth opportunities for all.

“Moving and stretching and strengthening can have tremendous benefit, even if that movement is modified,” said Janet Lantry, a therapist at Fenway: South End who leads the Yoga for Wellness classes. Janet is a licensed clinical social worker and a registered yoga teacher with a special interest in therapeutic yoga.

“I embrace limits and there is no expectation that anyone push past them,” she said. “I integrate music into the yoga practice and sometimes it feels like a yoga dance party. I want to provide an opportunity for people, especially people who may not know the joys and benefits of yoga, to be able to experience the freedom and enjoyment I experience practicing yoga.”

Past participants in the Yoga for Wellness series have left the room feeling positive and healthier. “It helped me get back into yoga, and be present for those three weeks,” said one attendee. “I feel it helped me quite a lot physically and emotionally.”

“I can’t express how effective it is for helping with mentally grounding yourself or how much it has helped with my muscle spasms in my back, not to mention building strength,” said another.

The next Yoga for Wellness classes will take place on August 3, 10, and 24. Each class is from 6:00 to 7:30pm and held on the ninth floor of our 1340 Boylston Street location.
