Introduction
A Note from Our Directors A.Salke Stephen L. Boswell, M.D.

In fiscal year 2010, Fenway Health has continued to work on our past successes all the while striving for healthcare equality for all of the communities we serve, including people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, people living with HIV/AIDS, and people who live and work in our neighborhoods.  This annual report provides an overview of some of that work and our accomplishments between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010.

Our 1340 Boylston Street and 142 Berkeley Street locations provided medical, behavioral health, dental and eye care for more people than ever before – 15,000 patients made 80,000 visits to Fenway.  We cared for 1,500 people living with HIV/AIDS and thanks to the expansion of our women’s health program at both of our locations, women became the fastest growing patient demographic group at Fenway Health.

Fenway’s two pharmacies filled nearly 400 prescriptions per day and gave away more than $250,000 in prescriptions to patients in need.  We helped nearly 650 people access health care coverage under various state-run programs and our Navigation Project held more than 2,000 individual and group client meetings with those at the highest risk for HIV transmission and other health disparities.

At the same time as we provided care and services to more and more people, The Fenway Institute was hard at work on research, policy, and education initiatives that will help ensure the health of our larger community moving forward.

Fenway’s Network for LGBT Health Equity funded the Queer the Census campaign designed to raise LGBT visibility with federal decision makers and demographers and encourage greater LGBT inclusion in future federal surveys, including the Census.  Doctors Judith Bradford and Harvey Makadon were appointed to the first ever LGBT issues committee at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, advisors to the nation on science, engineering, and medicine.  And The Fenway Institute hosted a meeting of nearly 100 of the country’s top researchers, key stakeholders and public health leaders to discuss the current state of knowledge of the sexual health of men who have sex with men and the implications of these findings for HIV and STD prevention.

As the fiscal year drew to a close, we were also working closely with our community partners at JRI Health ensure the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center’s smooth transition to the Fenway Health family.  The Borum, as it is affectionately known by its patients, provides medical and behavioral health care for young people ages 12 to 29, many of whom are LGBT or questioning, living with or at-risk of HIV infection, gang-involved, in need of reproductive health services, using substances or living on the streets.  The staff and providers at the Borum have earned the trust of these teens and young adults and created a safe and comfortable space for them to access care and services.  The Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center officially became a part of Fenway Health on July 1, 2010, the start of our 2011 fiscal year.

As we look ahead, we see many new challenges and opportunities.  How will political changes in Washington and the ongoing economic crisis impact access to health care?  How will new advances in HIV prevention affect infection rates and attitudes towards safer sex?  How will emerging data inform our continued growth and how we provide care for those who need it most?

Our accomplishments don’t happen in a vacuum.  They are due to the hard work, innovation, and commitment of the hundreds of dedicated people who work day in and day out at Fenway.  We also couldn’t do it without you.  With your help, we will rise to meet any challenges and seize any opportunities that develop as we work towards a future where everyone, everywhere, has access to the high-quality health care they need and deserve.

Sincerely,

Stewart B. Clifford, Jr.
