about Fenway Health

In 2009, Fenway Health opened new doors for our community, allowing us to care, heal and inspire like never before.

On March 30, Fenway Health moved into the Ansin Building at 1340 Boylston Street in Boston’s West Fens neighborhood.  This 10 story, 100,000 square foot health care and research facility is the largest building ever constructed by an organization with a specific mission to serve the LGBT community.

Fenway provided medical and behavioral health care to 13,000 people who made 70,000 patient visits.

  • We provided services to more than 1,400 people living with HIV, making us the largest outpatient provider of HIV care in New England.  One-fifth of known HIV-positive people in the Boston-area receive their care at Fenway.
  • Our Behavioral Health Department had more than 1,600 patient visits for individual therapy, 175 for group therapy and 320 for psychopharmacology visits each month in fiscal year 2009.
  • Our move to 1340 Boylston has allowed us to expand our medical and behavioral health staff and add additional exam and counseling rooms.  This will allow us to increase our capacity to care for our community moving forward.

Fenway Health’s move to the Ansin Building allowed us to add dental and eye care services for both adults and children.  Dental services include cleanings, check-ups, x-rays, oral health screenings, fillings and esthetic consultations and tooth whitening.

women's team

Fenway’s Women’s Health Program also expanded with the move to dedicated space on the third floor of 1340 Boylston Street.  We were able to grow our Women’s Health Team by hiring new providers and support staff and to increase our Women’s Health programming and outreach activities to help connect more women to care at Fenway Health.

South End Associates of Fenway Health, located at 142 Berkeley Street in Boston’s South End Neighborhood, continues to offer medical and behavioral health care in a private practice setting.  During fiscal year 2009, South End Associates added several women’s health specialists to its staff and continued to grow its patient base.

Fenway Pharmacy

The Fenway Pharmacy opened a new, street-level, retail storefront at 1340 Boylston Street and continues to operate at South End Associates.  Together, they fill an average of 300 prescriptions per day.  Both pharmacies participate in several discount programs, accommodating the limitations and needs of all Fenway patients, and provide more than $500,000 of free medication per year to patients in need.  They also offer free delivery service for homebound patients and others who need it.

During fiscal year 2009, Fenway Health’s HIV Counseling, Testing and Support Services staff administered 1,800 HIV antibody tests.  Nearly 70% of testers identified as men who have sex with men and the remainder described their risk as heterosexual, injection drug use and occupational exposure.  Fifteen individuals were confirmed to be HIV-positive and the majority of them were triaged into services at Fenway.

The Alternative Insemination Program at Fenway, believed to be the first of its kind in the United States, has assisted with the conception of more than 350 babies.  In addition to inseminations, the program offers social and emotional information and support, in the form of workshops and groups for LGBT parents and prospective parents.

Fenway’s Transgender Health Program was established to comprehensively address the needs of Fenway’s growing transgender patient base.  In fiscal year 2009, 310 transgender people received medical and behavioral health care at Fenway.

During calendar year 2008, Fenway’s LGBT Helpline and Peer Listening Line for LGBT young people together answered more than 3,000 calls from people in need all across the country.

Fenway Health’s Violence Recovery Program treats almost 150 victims of bias crimes, domestic violence, sexual assault and police misconduct each year.  The program offers individual as well as group counseling, including the trauma support group, domestic violence support group and male survivors of sexual abuse/assault group.  They also speak nationally about LGBT recovery from trauma and provide technical assistance and training to the Boston Police Department, District Attorney’s offices, hospitals, health centers, social service agencies and community and school groups.

Fenway’s Substance Abuse Treatment Program sees more than 300 new patients each year.  Most of these people have problems with multiple substances, including crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, and alcohol.  No one is ever turned away for lack of ability to pay and many patients are referred into other services at Fenway.
