We are pleased to announce that Brigham and Women’s Hospital has appointed Sari L. Reisner, Sc.D. as Director of Transgender Research in the Section of Men’s Health, Aging and Metabolism, in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Hypertension. Dr. Reisner is also Director of Transgender Health Research at The Fenway Institute.
Trained as a social and psychiatric epidemiologist, Dr. Reisner’s research focuses on health inequities in sexual and gender minority populations, specializing in transgender population health, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and mental health and substance use risks and resiliencies in adolescents and young adults. His work utilizes a participatory population perspective to work “with” not “on” communities.
Dr. Reisner had been appointed previously in the Division of General Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital since 2015, with a primary faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and a secondary faculty appointment in the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Dr. Reisner is currently Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator of multiple funded studies, including by National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), among others. He is PI of a PCORI-funded multisite longitudinal cohort with more than 4,500 transgender patients in Boston and New York City investigating the impact of medical gender affirmation on HIV-related and psychosocial health outcomes. He is also Multi-Principal Investigator of a NIH-funded multisite cohort study of over 1,100 transgender women in the eastern and southern United States to observationally examine HIV incidence and related risks.
Dr. Reisner has contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and is founding Associate Research Editor for the Pubmed-indexed journal Transgender Health. He is also a member of the World Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). In 2016, he was profiled in The Lancet as an emerging leader in global transgender population health.
