International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), observed annually on August 31, is a global event aimed at raising awareness about overdose and reducing the stigma of drug-related deaths. It also serves to acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends who have lost loved ones to overdose.
Massachusetts has been significantly impacted by the opioid crisis. According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, there were 2,104 confirmed opioid-related overdose deaths in 2022. This represents a continuous and troubling rise in overdose deaths over the past decade. The data also indicate that synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, are increasingly involved in these fatalities.
Fenway Health provides a holistic approach to substance use care, addressing both immediate and long-term needs. As one of several state-sanctioned and state-funded syringe exchange programs in Massachusetts, our Access: Drug User Health Program distributes and exchanges syringes to people who use drugs. Access is one of the state’s pilot sites for the distribution of Narcan, a nasal spray provided to IDUs and their network of supportive family and friends to reverse potentially fatal overdoses.
Our Sexual Health Clinic is a safe and respectful place to receive culturally competent and judgment-free sexual health services, including:
- STI/HIV/Hep C Testing: These tests are available at no cost to the patient, ensuring that everyone has access to necessary health screenings.
- STI Symptom Evaluation and Treatment: Immediate evaluation and treatment for symptoms related to sexually transmitted infections, often provided at no cost.
- HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP): Available for individuals who may have been exposed to HIV, helping to prevent infection.
- Same-Day PrEP Initiation: Quick access to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV prevention.
- Linkage to Medical Care: Ensuring patients are connected to the appropriate medical services for their needs.
